Na'vi Translator dialogue: people before pronouns

Na'vi distinguishes singular, dual, trial and plural. Its first-person group pronouns also distinguish including the listener from excluding them. “We will return tomorrow” could be an invitation or a report about a different group. Writing “you and I” resolves that difference without adding a long explanation.

Use the Na'vi Translator with one speaker’s line at a time. Keep character names beside the dialogue in your own notes. If the next speaker replies “we,” check whether they refer to the same people; the membership can change even when the English pronoun stays identical.

For an invitation, name the activity and who is invited. For a warning, state the action to avoid. A source such as “Do not enter the forest tonight” has a clearer purpose than “Danger in the trees.” Specific verbs give the Na'vi Translator more useful material than scene labels or disconnected keywords.

The planner prepares English wording. After translation, compare the group size, time and negative statements with that source. These checks help you catch a lost “not” or a changed participant even before you investigate the sentence’s individual words.

Spelling & source text

Keep meaningful letters in the Na'vi Translator

When reading a Na'vi Translator result, start with the spelling. A missing mark or half of a two-letter sound can make a familiar expression difficult to recognise. These four checks are especially useful when copying text from subtitles, a message or a fan-made caption.

ä and ì: These are separate vowels, not optional decorations on a and i. Preserve them when copying dialogue. Replacing every marked vowel with an unmarked one changes the spelling and can make a dictionary search fail.
The apostrophe: ’: Inside a Na’vi word, this sign represents a glottal stop, a consonant. It is not an English-style contraction mark. Keep its position when entering text; removing it is not a harmless way to simplify a difficult word.
px, tx and kx: In Forest Na’vi, each pair represents one ejective consonant. The x is part of the spelling, not a separate “ks” sound. Preserve both letters when copying a word or comparing it with a dictionary entry.
ng, ts, ll and rr: The pairs ng and ts each represent one consonant. The spellings ll and rr can form a syllable without an ordinary vowel. Do not insert an extra vowel simply because the written form looks unfamiliar to an English reader.

Read a Na'vi Translator passage in context

Copy one complete line into the Na'vi Translator with Na'vi selected on the left. Keep a nearby sentence available in your notes. A reply can omit information that was stated in the previous line, so a stand-alone word may not reveal what the speaker means.

Dictionary entries usually show a base form. In a sentence, case endings can mark a participant’s role, and verb infixes appear within a word. If you cannot find a form, record the whole spelling before trying to identify its parts. Removing letters at random can turn the word into an unrelated entry.

Read the English result as a sentence, then check who acts, what they act on and when. A Na'vi Translator reading is easier to assess beside an actual passage than beside a guessed English paraphrase. For a film line, keep the scene or timestamp so you can locate the same exchange again.

Forest and Reef spellings

Reef Na'vi has documented sound differences from Forest Na'vi. In some positions, ejectives correspond to b, d and g, and Reef spelling can also use ù. Keep the source’s dialect label when comparing forms. Do not automatically replace every occurrence of px, tx or kx across a passage.

This Na'vi Translator has no separate dialect selector. For dialect-specific dialogue, retain the original line and compare its spelling with a reference for that variety. A difference between two sources may reflect dialect rather than a copying error.

For captions, decide the wording before adding line breaks or decorative punctuation. Copy the final Na'vi Translator text into the destination app and check its marked vowels there. Fonts can display the same characters differently; replacing a missing character with an English approximation changes the text.

The Na'vi Translator works with text in this language; the spelling Navi in a search usually refers to the same language when the context is Avatar or Pandora.

How do I translate English with the Na'vi Translator?

Can the Na'vi Translator translate back into English?

Yes. Use the swap button to place Na’vi on the source side and paste the text you want to read. Keep apostrophes and marked vowels. Work from the written passage rather than an approximate English spelling of what you heard. For an unfamiliar expression, retain the surrounding exchange so its speaker and context stay clear.

Can I translate an Avatar recording or a screenshot?

This page accepts typed or pasted text. It does not transcribe speech or read text from an image. Obtain a written line first, preserving its special characters, then use the Na'vi Translator. If the transcription comes from subtitles, keep the scene reference so you can compare the original exchange.

Why do I see oe and oel, or nga and ngati?

These forms can express different grammatical roles. A dictionary headword is not always the form that belongs in a sentence. When checking a Na'vi Translator result, identify the actor and the object rather than replacing every form with the shortest one. The surrounding verb and the sentence structure matter when choosing an ending.

Does this tool distinguish Forest and Reef dialects?

The Na'vi Translator has a single language setting, with no switch for Forest or Reef. Preserve a source’s dialect label and spelling when studying a film passage. Is the Na'vi Translator free, and how much can I enter?
